Q: How is the depth being calculated in NaviPac? What are the formulas used?


A: NaviPac is calculating the depth by using two methods. The methods are described below.


The first  method is Saunders and Fofonoff - Simple and it's formula is:

Depth = (Pressure - Pressure at Surface)/ (1000*Gravity*Water Density)

Travel time to depth conversion formula is Depth = Travel Time * Sound velocity



The second method is the UNESCO formula with the integration of the geopotential anomaly. 

You may improve the depth calculation by adding a CTD profile and perform a full integration through the water column. File is selected by ticking the Use UNESCO. Note that the CTD file as minimum must include Conductivity, Pressure and Temperature. A selection of import template guides you through the file format.
