This article answers the most common questions and issues with the EC-3D (EIVA Cleaning – 3 dimensions) cleaning tool in NaviModel Producer, compiled from recurring EIVA support cases. Most EC-3D errors and crashes are related to the GPU, the graphics driver or the available system resources.
Q: EC-3D shows an OpenCL error such as "deviceNotFound", or "Something has gone wrong in EC-3D"
A: These messages almost always point to a GPU, driver or resource problem. Work through the following steps in order:
- Confirm NaviModel is set to use the GPU rather than the CPU (see "How can I set NaviModel or Helmsman's display to use my GPU instead of CPU?").
- Install the latest NVIDIA graphics driver, performing a clean install or upgrade.
- In the NVIDIA Control Panel, under Manage 3D Settings, set NaviModel to use the High-performance NVIDIA processor.
- Set the OpenCL performance to "Low" in NaviModel.
- Make sure there is enough free disk space for the project and the temporary processing folders (the temporary folder is on drive C: by default).
- If "deviceNotFound" persists on a workstation that also has integrated graphics (for example AMD or Intel) alongside the NVIDIA card, the integrated GPU driver may be conflicting. Disable or uninstall the integrated GPU driver via Device Manager and restart Windows.
- As a last resort, locate OpenCL.dll and OpenCL32.dll on the computer and copy them to C:\Windows\System32, then restart the PC; or uninstall and reinstall NaviModel.
Q: EC-3D keeps crashing after working for a while
A: Typical causes are an unsuitable GPU setup, very large selection areas, low disk space, or GPU memory growth over a long session. Recommended mitigations:
- Reduce the selection area so fewer points are processed per run.
- Ensure the NVIDIA GPU is used and the latest driver is installed.
- Keep sufficient free disk space and set OpenCL performance to "Low".
- Do a fresh re-import of the data, and restart NaviModel periodically (for example when GPU memory usage climbs).
Q: EC-3D is very slow or crashes on a virtual desktop (AVD) or a machine without an NVIDIA card
A: EC-3D needs a CUDA/OpenCL-capable NVIDIA GPU for stable performance. On CPU-only machines, such as virtual desktops without GPU passthrough, EC-3D falls back to CPU processing, but the intensive cleaning operations are optimised for the GPU. Running them on the CPU alone greatly increases processing time and can cause NaviModel to exceed limits and crash. The fix is to improve the hardware setup, for example by adding an NVIDIA GPU and driver or enabling GPU passthrough.
Q: The "Distance to surface" method is much slower than the other methods
A: This is expected: it is more computationally intensive than the other methods. On around 2.5 million points it can take several minutes, compared with roughly 30 seconds for a lighter method, and the slowness affects both the preview calculation and the removal of points. Use a smaller selection or a lighter method for quick passes.
Q: Can I keep or restore the points EC-3D flags instead of losing them?
A: EC-3D never deletes points, noise is flagged as rejected, not removed (this is true of all NaviModel cleaning tools). There is no undo, but you can clear the flags: use Accept everything to re-accept all points, or Accept with a boundary to clear rejections within a specific area. See "Accepting and rejecting points" in the EC-3D cleaning tool reference article.
Q: Where are the EC-3D crash logs?
A: Crash logs are stored in C:\ProgramData\EIVA\NaviModel Producer\Diagnostics. Attach these files when contacting EIVA support about an EC-3D problem.
The table below summarises the most common symptoms and first actions.
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| "OpenCL error" / "deviceNotFound" | GPU not selected, outdated driver, or conflicting integrated GPU driver | Set GPU usage, update driver, disable integrated GPU driver, set OpenCL to Low |
| Crash after extended use | Large selection area, low disk space, GPU memory growth | Reduce selection area, free disk space, restart NaviModel periodically |
| Crashes / very slow on virtual desktop | No NVIDIA GPU (CPU-only fallback) | Add an NVIDIA GPU / enable GPU passthrough |
| Distance to surface very slow | Method is computationally heavy | Use a smaller selection or a lighter method |
